Senator Inhofe Erroneously Claims We Are In A Nine-Year Cooling Trend

Union of Concerned Scientists:
In response to a question during an ABC News / Washington Post interview today about recent heat waves and record temperatures, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said, "I don't think that anyone disagrees with the fact that we actually are in a cold period that started about nine years ago."Cold period? Not quite. "In fact, climate scientists disagree with Senator Inhofe's statement," said Brenda Ekwurzel, a climate scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).

Glenn Beck has a plan. He says that if we need to, we can lower the temperature dramatically just by switching from Fahrenheit to Celsius.

The planet's temperature is rising at an accelerated pace that most scientists say is due to man-made factors. As the earth's climate changes, they predict it will lead to rising sea levels and more extreme weather, including droughts, floods and storms.

"The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril. There may still be disputes about exactly how much we're contributing to the warming of the earth's atmosphere and how much is naturally occurring, but what we can be scientifically certain of is that our continued use of fossil fuels is pushing us to a point of no return. And unless we free ourselves from a dependence on these fossil fuels and chart a new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generations to global catastrophe."

Quote by Lyndon B Johnson
"If future generations are to remember us more with gratitude than sorrow, we must achieve more than just the miracles of technology. We must also leave them a glimpse of the world as it was created, not just as it looked when we got through with it."-

In this move, actor Pete Postlethwaite portrays an archivist in the year 2055, asking the question, "Why didn't we stop climate change when we still had the chance?" He looks back on real documentary footage of people from around the world in in those early years of the century before runaway climate change took place, to try to find an answer.
This is an excellent movie which I highly recommend. My only concern is that it's perhaps not for the uninitiated as it seems a little short on hope. But hope is what we're all about. (SS)

10,000 Australians Protest Global Warming

John Nichols writes in The Nation Magazine:
"It is good to take a cue from the Australians. But the movement that changes that American debate will need to be far more aggressive, as this country's cautious Democrats and delusional Republicans have created a toxic combination that makes inaction that default position. (And our cramped electoral system offers far fewer openings for the US Greens to pressure the process in the way the Australian Greens have.)"

- Martin Luther King, JrOur Climate – New IPhone app is wolf in sheep’s clothing

Watch out for a new IPhone app that is masquerading as a resource on climate change science. Promoted by What's Up With That (a virulent climate denier site) as "very useful"- Our Climate will help you clarify your attitude on climate change. "Where are you at on climate change?" reads the product description. "Are you, like many, confused about the issue and not sure what to believe, given all the media stories?"
As one astute reviewer of the app put it, "People who are not educated on the planet and climate will be easily taken in by this app. The fact is there is no real scientific merit in this app."
Enough said. Stay clear.

An international team of climate scientists led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed that climate change is "undeniable" and clearly driven by the "human fingerprints" of greenhouse gas emissions. The findings are based on new data that was not reviewed during the most recent 2007 report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The Environmental Protection Agency, showing some of the kind of guts and emotional fortitude that the Senate seems unable to find in the global warming debate, rejected an effort to keep it from regulating greenhouse gas emissions, saying that e-mails released in last fall’s “Climategate” scandal gave it no reason to reconsider the science of global warming.

Global warming is a personal affair – getting energy efficient.
In a June survey by the Political Psychology Research Group at Stanford University, 74 percent of respondents said yes when asked if the Earth has been warming over the last 100 years, and 75 percent said that human behavior was "substantially responsible." An even greater number of respondents -- 80 percent -- supported government requirements to make new homes and office buildings more energy efficient.
